I do know what you mean.

When I was attending NYU Grad Film School, we called it the "NYU Save" because it almost always meant someone got in the editing room and realized their script or direction didn't work so know they had to us a V.O. to save it.

But when crafted as part of the film from the very beginning, it can be a very powerful and wonderful cinematic tool.

All the best,

You are right, there are good or even great movies out there that make use of voice-overs.

But that doesn't change the fact it's the simplest and easiest way to convey information. Or that in 95% of all cases the movie in question is a prove of why they used voice-overs: neither the writer nor the production crew had some spark of creativity whatsoever.

So if I walked out of movies with voice-overs, I would have missed BADLANDS, DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, TAXI DRIVER, THE OPPOSITE OF SEX, SUNSET BOULEVARD...

I agree it is often a crutch that bad filmmakers use to prop up a weak narrative, but you can't throw all the babies with the bathwater.
